Information about Kadifekale

 

History: The history of Kadifekale dates back to the 4th century BC. It was first built by Lysimachos, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. The castle was also used in the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods and bears traces from each period.

 

Location: Kadifekale is located on Pagos Hill, which is 186 meters high and overlooks the Gulf of Izmir, in the Konak district of Izmir. Thanks to its location, the castle offers a magnificent city view.

 

Transportation: You can reach Kadifekale by taking the bus number 33 from Konak. It is also possible to reach the castle on foot from the Agora.

 

Places to See: In Kadifekale;

  • Walls and Towers: The western and southern walls of the castle and five of its towers have survived to this day. The towers are between 20 and 35 meters high.
  • Agora: The Agora, located at the foot of the castle, is the marketplace of ancient Izmir.
  • Altar of Zeus: From the Altar of Zeus, located at the highest point of the castle, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Gulf of Izmir.
  • Forty Pillars Cistern: This cistern, located inside the castle, has a water storage capacity of 2,650 cubic meters.

Visiting Hours: Kadifekale is open to visitors every day from 08:00 to 19:00.

 

Entrance Fee: Entrance to Kadifekale is charged. You can learn the current entrance fee from the museum ticket office.

 

Useful Information:

  • It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes when going up to Kadifekale.
  • It is useful to have sunscreen and a hat, especially in summer.
  • There is a buffet inside the castle where you can buy food and drinks.
  • There is a parking lot at the foot of the castle.

The best time to visit Kadifekale is during spring and autumn. It can be quite hot in summer.
