History:
Pergamon Ancient City was founded in the 12th century BC.
The city became an important center of science, art, and culture under the patronage of the Pergamon Kings, such as Lysimachus, Eumenes II, Attalus I, and Attalus II.
With the annexation of the Pergamon Kingdom to the Roman Empire in 133 BC, the city began to lose its importance.
The city, which was also used as a settlement during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, was rediscovered in the 19th century with archaeological excavations.
Important Structures:
Acropolis: The Acropolis, located at the highest point of Pergamon Ancient City, houses important structures such as the Altar of Zeus, the Temple of Athena, the Trajaneum, and the Asklepion.
Altar of Zeus: One of the most important structures in Pergamon, the Altar of Zeus is dedicated to Zeus and Athena.
Temple of Athena: The Temple of Athena, an Ionic temple, is located in the Pergamon Acropolis.
Trajaneum: A monumental structure dedicated to the Roman Emperor Trajan.
Asklepion: One of the most important health centers in Pergamon, the Asklepion is dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius.
